Obesity is the fastest-growing health problem in China
Obesity is the fastest-growing health problem in China, and one of the most serious chronic conditions of our time. Approximately 25% of the adult population is either overweight or obese, and 15.5%, about 92.4 million with diabetes. Chinese surgeons have been active practitioners of bariatric and metabolic surgery and have accumulated extensive surgical experience. The conference was also a great opportunity for the Chinese B&M doctors to learn and to share their expertise and experiences with domestic and oversea eminent specialists.
The 2nd International Forum of Bariatric and Metabolic Surgery was held by professor Hui Liang, director of the bariatric and metabolic center of the first affiliated hospital of Nanjing medical university on May 9-11,2014, Nanjing China. The conference was also a great opportunity for the Chinese bariatric and metabolic doctors to learn and to share their expertise and experiences with domestic and oversea eminent specialists.
Top level surgeons and physicians from USA, Australia, India, Singapore, Thailand, Philippine, Taiwan, Hong Kong and all over the China were brought together to deliberated upon the indications, safety, and progress of the bariatric and metabolic surgery in the management of T2DM, introduce new surgical procedures and experiences, and share ideas of case management and patients’ education.
The non-obese diabetes surgery is the most hot topic in the conference, 9 centers from IEF China Chapter presented their experience.
The forum was opened by Prof.Hui Liang, the vice-president of Chinese Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery(CSMBS), who also is the director of IBC China Chapter. Dr. Liang reviewed the development of the society achievements in the past years. About 4700 cases operation were performed in 2013 in China, 80% were finished in laparoscopy.
Prof. Tomasz G. Rogula, the chairman of International Bariatric Club (IBC), shared the progress of the robotic bariatric surgery. Prof. Rogula outlined the development of robotic bariatric surgery in the USA . He introduced the outcomes, learning curve, costs and techniques of the robotic surgery. At last, Prof. Rogula showed the videos of his own robotic surgery. His speaking pointed out a new way of bariatric and metabolic surgery .
The International Forum of bariatric & metabolic surgery(Nanjing) will be held every year. It is open for all metabolic doctors, and welcome all IBC numbers to China give the lectures and discuss with Chinese surgeon.
