Professional Activities and Distinctions:
Dr. Rosenthal completed his medical school and surgical residency in Rosario Argentina. In 1982 he emigrated toGermanyand after 8 years of surgical residency became an attending surgeon at the Wolfgang Goethe University, Nordwest Hospital. In 1993 after obtaining his German board certification, Dr. Rosenthal emigrated to theUSAand spent 3 years as a fellow at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, UCLA in Los Angeles. Between 1996 and 1999, he repeated his general surgery residency at Mount Sinai Medical inNew Yorkand obtained the USA Board Certification in General Surgery. Since 1999 he is the Chief of MIS and Bariatric Surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida. He is the director of the fellowship program and has recently been appointed as director of the general surgery residency program as well.
Dr. Rosenthal is actively involved in SAGES where he is a member of the board of Governors since 2008. He is also member of multiple committee’s and is the co chair of the international committee and secretary of the SAGES foundation for research and education.
Dr. Rosenthal has served on the Clinical Issues, Emerging Technologies, Institutional Relationships, Quality and Standards and Education Committees of ASMBS. He is currently chair of the International Development Committee. As founding chair of the International Committee, he has made great strides in advancing international participation by initiating new courses, the international FASMBS program, award programs and networking opportunities trying to get ASMBS and IFSO to collaborate in a closer fashion. He is representing ASMBS on the Certified Obesity Medical Physician Taskforce and has been recently appointed secretary to the Board of theASMBS Foundation. He is a member of the Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence Review Committee’s of SRC and ACS. He is the Clinical Editor of Bariatric Times, and a member of the Editorial Board of Selected Readings in General Surgery, Surgical Endoscopy and Obesity Surgery. In addition Dr. Rosenthal is associate editor of SOARD.
Dr. Rosenthal has served as the ASMBS representative to IFSO since 2008. He has also served at membership committee and center of excellence committee of IFSO. He is currently the chair of the SRC initiated and IFSO endorsed International Centers of Excellence (ICE) accreditation program. Dr. Rosenthal was the pivot in starting the Asia Pacific Obesity Surgery Society 8 years ago inSeoulKoreaand is a member of the Bariatric Committee of FELAC and ALACE.
Areas of Research and Publication:
He is author or co-author in over 300 abstracts and peer reviewed publications, more than 30 book chapters and over 80 educational videos. He is the Co Editor of Netter’s Gastroenterology (Elsevier), Operative Strategies in Laparoscopic Surgery (Springer), and Weight Loss Surgery (Matrix). For the last 11 years Dr. Rosenthal is the Director of an annual meeting endorsed by IFSO entitled “Surgery of the Foregut’ with the participation of over 200 surgeons from around the globe.
